In this workshop, we will examine some of the “stuff that bothers us”, sometimes leaving us feeling tossed around by negativity from all directions, within and without. Western psychology offers us valuable options such as reframing a narrative, shifting perspective, or mining previous experiences for insight. Buddhist psychology offers us additional tools we will explore to help us navigate these universal human experiences.

Two major approaches will be explored. First, once we are trapped in a negative reaction and realize “the train has left the station” so to speak, we can apply antidotes to counteract the destructive path of thinking. Secondly, by cultivating meditative calmness and clarity, we can learn to observe the subtle changes in our bodies and in our energy that accompany the arising of negative mental states, before they are fully formed. Applying skillful compassionate awareness, we can open to freedom.

This workshop will work with meditation practices for calm and relaxation, gentle movement, and guided exercises to practice both of these approaches. It is suitable for anyone interested in exploring new ways to transform negative emotions, or anyone interested in deepening their skills.
