Full Moon Chant
In many Buddhist lands, the full moon is a time to gather for prayer and meditation. We continue this tradition at the Nyingma Institute through holding a chanting ceremony on full moon nights. Join Nyingma students and friends in chanting the Vajra Guru Mantra interspersed with periods of meditation. The chant is held in one of our classrooms and is led by a faculty member, from 8:00-9:30 PM.
Upcoming Chants
Please call (510) 809-1000 if you are attending for the first time or if you have questions about the chant. This event is free and open to the public.
“Saga Dawa,” An Auspicious Month, May 14-June 12
Saga Dawa is the name of the Tibetan month in which the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, Parinirvana, and conception are celebrated. An especially auspicious month for intense practice and positive action, Saga Dawa begins this year on May 14 and ends June 12. Nyingma students traditionally avoid eating meat or taking intoxicants during this time.
Students and friends are invited to join us at the Nyingma Institute in celebrating both the Buddha’s birth and enlightenment this year. The Buddha’s birth celebration begins at 8 PM on May 20 with a special prayer to Shakyamuni Buddha. Chanting and meditation follow until 9:30 PM. The enlightenment celebration (May 27) includes chanting and meditation from 8—9:30 PM.
